Flu shot available for $25 ( Flyvaccine quadrivalent used)

Staying well takes minutes: get a flu shot
By Gina Kraman

It takes minutes to prevent getting an illness that could lead to days off work, weeks of feeling awful, an extensive hospitalization stay, or even death.  Flu season runs October through May, and doctors recommend that all people more than six months old get vaccinated against this year’s seasonal flu.

It takes just a few minutes to get a flu shot.  Many medical offices, such as Woodridge Clinic, don’t require appointments to walk in and request a vaccine that can prevent the flu, and the consequent symptoms of fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches, and fatigue.

Woodridge Clinic urges people to get the vaccine now, to be prepared for flu outbreaks.  Although flu activity peaks traditionally in January or later, October outbreaks are possible.  Flu protection isn’t immediate, as it takes the body two weeks after vaccination to develop antibodies.  People can’t get the flu from the vaccine, as the virus is inactive.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Influenza is a serious disease.  Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others.”

The vaccine protects against the flu viruses that research indicates will be the most common in the upcoming months.  A flu vaccine is needed each year, as the flu virus changes, and the vaccine is updated to address the current virus.

The CDC adds that the flu vaccination is especially important for people at a greater risk of getting seriously ill from the flu, including older adults, people suffering from chronic health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, and young children.

Private manufacturers produce the flu vaccine, and have projected that they will supply between 171-179 million doses for the U.S. market, according to the CDC.

Happy Physical to you!
By Gina Kraman

A bottle of cologne.  A new shirt.  An annual physical.  Which is not on your birthday gift wish list?  But which one can help you to potentially live longer to enjoy many more birthdays?

Scheduling an annual physical exam to coincide with your birthday is one way doctors encourage patients to remember to have this valuable test.

According to the National Institutes of Health, physicals help doctors check for diseases such as high blood pressure, determine risks for potential problems, update health records and vaccinations, and discuss healthy lifestyle choices.

There’s some debate that an annual physical may be unnecessary, however a survey published in the Archives of Internal Medicine reports that 65 percent of nearly 800 primary care doctors from major cities believe annual physicals are valuable to detect illnesses early, and improve patient-physician relationships.

During a physical for both men and women, checking weight, blood pressure, heart and respiration rates are routine, according to Woodridge Clinic.  When doctors listen to your heart with a stethoscope, they’re checking for irregular heartbeats, heart murmurs, or other indications of heart disease.  They also check lungs for crackles and wheezes, which could signal lung problems.  Throats, tonsils (revealed when you “say ahh”), ears, eyes, lymph nodes, and other body parts are examined.  Abdomens are pressed to detect abnormal masses or fluid build up.  Nerve strength, mental issues, hearing, vision, and skin problems may also be evaluated.

To increase the effectiveness of their physical exams, doctors at Woodridge Clinic encourage patients to prepare by bringing a list of any medical concerns, and a current list of medications and supplements being taken.  They support routine physicals, as detecting problems earlier, such as high cholesterol and diabetes, before they even cause symptoms, can improve outcomes.
